IBM opens a smarter commerce centre in Singapore

The centre aims to help local businesses improve their overall commerce flow as well as customer engagement.

Together with the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB), IBM has launched the IBM Smarter Commerce Centre of Competency (SCCOC) to help local businesses embrace e-commerce and better engage with their customers.

According to yStats, e-commerce is rapidly growing in the Asia Pacific region, with a forecasted annual growth rate of 20 percent from now till 2018. This growth is attributed to the large population base, as well as high Internet and mobile penetration rate in the region.

To help Singapore firms tap on this growth, the SCCOC will focus on enabling new business processes that remove the silos of procurement, marketing, selling and fulfillment to help companies provide integrated customer experiences across the commerce cycle. It will do so by providing and developing solutions that leverage the cloud, analytics, mobile and security platforms. Such solutions include customer analytics, the Watson engagement advisor, and predictive analytics for supply chain and risk management.

Besides that, the SCCOC will groom Singaporeans in software development and analytics to better serve the e-commerce needs of the region.  

"Through the Centre of Competency, we intend to bring an integrated lifecycle approach to e-commerce, to improve how businesses connect with their supply chain and customers through their websites and even social networks. We will also be building critical capabilities and deepening skills to raise the competency of professionals in the industry and generate higher value for our clients in the region," said Tim Greisinger, Managing Director of IBM Singapore.

Through the SCCOC, IBM and EDB will also partner industry associations such as the Singapore infocomm Technology Federation (SiTF) and the Marketing Institute of Singapore (MIS) to educate marketing professionals on how they could leverage technology to transform the way they work. Industry leaders such as OCBC Bank and StarHub will also be brought onboard to help identify industry challenges that the SCCOC can address with Commerce Proof of Concepts.

The SCCOC is expected to be fully operational by the end of this year, and will be based in IBM Singapore Technology Park (ISTP) at Tampines. By 2017, the SCCOC will house more than 30 research scientists and engineers, who will be involved in defining analytics guidelines and solutions, developing advanced algorithms, data mining for platforms, testing and evaluation of programmatic models, and deploying the plan models.
