HP recently announced a technology services offering specifically aimed at enterprise chief information officers (CIOs). The HP Strategic IT Advisory Services is specifically aimed at CIOs who are tasked to ensure that the organisation's IT investments are translated into profits.
HP cited a Gartner study which shows that organisations equate their CIO's job performance to the company's efforts to reach its corporate goals. This builds a situation where a CIO's salary becomes dependent on how much IT has helped the organisation achieve its goals.
"Our research shows that by 2016, innovation accomplishments will be among the top three selection criteria for new CIOs," said Ken McGee, vice president and fellow, Gartner. "This trend is indicative of the extent to which IT will be so closely aligned with enterprise goals that it is the key driver in growth and profitability. To get to this future state, IT must move from supporting to empowering the enterprise."
Under the new HP services offerings, CIOs can accss of a host of HP services, such as IT business strategising, and advice on innovative technologies such as cloud computing.
Industry analysts said the offerings under the new services may not be entirely new but they are in synch with HP's strategy to align their products and services according to market directions and to make them more relevant.
Analysts added that the HP Strategic IT Advisory Services are particularly relevant to Asia Pacific CIOs, especially those rethinking or renewing their services contracts.
"This announcement will help IT decision makers formulate strategies on how IT strategies can be aligned to business goals. In an age where IT is closely inter-twined with formulation and execution of business strategies, such a service will allow CXOs to tap into best practices in IT Strategy implementation," said Arun Chandrasekaran, research director of ICT, Frost & Sullivan.
"This is a continued shift by IT services companies that are striving to bridge the chasm between business consulting and technology consulting."
Jens Butler, principal analyst - IT Services, Ovum, said the announcement's relevance to APAC CIOs is "pretty high, given that HP is generally in the top two or three within most of the APAC markets".
Butler added that the range of services "is of most relevance to those who are coming to the end of contracts or looking to acquire new services from the market and considering their existing services."
The HP Strategic IT Advisory Services include advising the CIO on transformational change in the organisation, including taking into account mergers and acquisitions, and determining the business value of IT.
HP said the services are available in the region, including Japan, through HP Technology Consulting.
