Despite a major push by rival Lenovo, Hewlett-Packard has held onto its position as the top seller of PCs worldwide, according to IDC.

"If I were Lenovo, I would hit the consumer market hard and step on HPs throat," he said.

Rounding out the top five PC makers in the IDC list are third-place Dell, whose shipments declined by 20.8% in the fourth quarter compare to the year-earlier period, Acer Group, whose PC shipments declined by 28.2% in the quarter, and ASUS, whose shipments grew by 5.6%.
