How to stream downloaded files from your smartphone to your Chromecast

The Chromecast has just hit Australia, and plenty of people are excited about it. But one question we keep getting asked is whether the Chromecast can be used to stream videos that have been downloaded from the Internet. The short answer is ‘yes'. The long answer is ‘you need an app to do it'.

Your wireless network needs to be fast enough and stable enough to support streaming these types of files, otherwise you will experience poor playback. We used a Billion BiPAC 8800AXL for our tests. The NAS device was connected via Gigabit Ethernet, our phone was connected via the 5GHz wireless network, and the Chromecast was connected via the 2.4GHz network. The router was next to the Chromecast. If your router is too far away from your TV and Chromecast, then you might need to look into boosting the wireless signal by using a wireless extender.
