Here's how to get Microsoft Office Mobile on your iPhone, and access Word, Excel and Powerpoint documents on the go.

Microsoft Office Mobile for iPhone has finally been announced, bringing Microsoft's suite of Office programs - Word, Excel and Powerpoint - to the Apple iPhone. Here's how to get Microsoft Office Mobile on your iPhone.

Getting Microsoft Office Mobile for iPhone: Subscribe to Office 365
Microsoft Office Mobile for iPhone is exclusively available to Office 365 subscribers, so you'll need to sign up for the service if you haven't already.

Office 365 Home Premium costs £79.99 per year, or you can pay by the month: it's £7.99 a month. Small business subscriptions cost £8.40 per month for Office 365 Small Business Premium.

American customers are in luck: Microsoft Office Mobile for iPhone has already hit the US App Store. It's not arrived in the UK quite yet, but there shouldn't be much of a wait: Microsoft has said "Office Mobile for iPhone will be available in 29 languages covering 135 markets. The international rollout will occur over approximately 4-5 days."

Happily for Office 365 subscribers, using Office Mobile for iPhone doesn't cost anything on top of your subscription, although Microsoft specifies that your plan must include Office Mobile. Check your terms and conditions in case you need to upgrade to Premium.

Getting Microsoft Office Mobile for iPhone: Sign in and get started
Microsoft advises users how to sign in: "When signing in to Office Mobile for iPhone, you can use either a Microsoft Account associated with your Office 365 subscription or your Organization Account if you are using Office 365 at work."

Does Microsoft Office Mobile for iPhone work on the iPad?
Not really. In one sense it does: like all iPhone apps, Microsoft Office Mobile for iPhone can run on an iPad in a small, iPhone-sized window taking up only part of the screen; and if you select the '2X' option it will be blown up to take up most of the iPad's screen space. But that isn't optimised to take advantage of the iPad's screen resolution.

Microsoft recommends that iPad owners access Office documents by using Office Web Apps.

Which iPhones are compatible with Microsoft Office Mobile for iPhone?
The iPhone 4, iPhone 4S and iPhone 5, and the iPod touch , running iOS 6.1 or later, are all compatible with Microsoft Office Mobile for iPhone.
