How Malaysia's Freight Mark mapped a future-proof storage strategy: interview

AvantiKumar | June 10, 2015
In this case study interview, Computerworld talks with the Malaysian integrated logistics firm's IT director Yau Kah Keng and Nimble Storage's Asean Regional Director Rachel Ler.

Cost: Nimble Storage solution helped us reduce upgrading costs as the hardware does not require a change on a regular basis.

Previously we had to increase our storage infrastructure every six months and with the Nimble Storage solution we estimate that the current storage will adequately meet our needs for at least 18 months.

So far we noticed that the operating cost has been reduced by 15 percent (we are saving about RM100,000 [US$26,590] a year) Productivity - Our productivity gains are in excess of 30% on hardware performance and efficiencies.

Could you talk about how you found the project implementation and what effect it had on your staff?

We had identified the storage problem some time ago and we were looking for a solution that best fit our business growth and strategic cost savings needs. After embarking on a vendor selection process, it took us two months to evaluate different vendor solutions and products.

After we made the decision to implement Nimble SAN, the installation and data migration was seamless and took about a month. Most importantly the transition was completed without any disruption to business systems.

The training was again relatively easy as Nimble products are easy to operate and beyond the initial day training our team was able to operate the equipment with confidence.

Our applications performance has improved and we see that users have become more productive due to lower wait times. We see users saving on average one to two hours as a direct result of the Nimble solutions.

This also means that our internal customers are better served and we as an IT department face lesser issues and are able to address mission critical needs better.

Did you have any difficulties from any of your customers both within and outside the company from rolling out this solution?

Cost is very important to our key management stakeholders, and they really appreciate the fact that we can now reduce the year on year IT budget. Employees have responded to the changes positively as we have increased their operational productivity while making much better and more effective use of our storage resources.

As I mentioned, the installation and migration process was completed with minimal disruptions to daily routines. The Nimble Storage implementation team was exemplary and provide excellent customer support to ensure a smooth and very effective transition. The transition from production data was seamless and with no disruption to our consumers.

As a result, we actually needed very little organisational/workflow changes or re-training as the systems were based on our organisational requirements, operations and workflow. That was another positive and attractive aspect of implementing Nimble Storage solutions.
