Up up, down down, left right, left right. The classic "Konami code" is burned into the brain of any NES-owning child of the eighties--including some mischievous soul inside of Google.
Conducting a Google voice search for the classic code prompts Google's robo-voice to declare "Cheat mode unlocked: Unlimited free Google searches." That's more generous than the actual Contra code, which gave game players a mere 30 lives. Pfah!
The trick works just fine on phones, too.
This isn't the first time Google's succumbed to the lure of the classic cheat combination. Entering the Konami code on the Chromebook Pixel causes the light strip on the lid to dance in a rainbow of colors.
But the fun doesn't stop at video game references! Google's famous for its Easter Egg enthusiasm, which runs so deep that a whopping nine Easter Eggs appeared in the company's Search Knowledge Graph last Halloween alone. Whew. Just don't try to use your voice to search for naughty, nasty words. Google doesn't like that.
