The French Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MFCCI) has given a Corporate Social Responsibility award to energy specialist Schneider Electric for its energy efficiency education initiatives in Malaysia during 2012.
On accepting the award, Schneider Electric Malaysia country president Peter Cave said the driving force behind its education programme was to promote green energy and sustainability to various stakeholders in Malaysia.
"A cornerstone of the company's efforts is Energy University, a free, Web-based, and professional level training programme, which is delivered online," said Cave. "The Energy University courses are designed to support anyone involved in the decision-making, management, planning, design, or construction of a space impacted by energy.
He said the programme was endorsed by the Energy Commission of Malaysia (Suruhanjaya Tenaga) and 17 global professional organisations - 13 of which offer continuing education credits for members who participate in the programme. Recently, Energy University saw the integration of Data Center University, putting information on all data centre and energy efficiency courses on one website to further benefit more than 120,000 users.
"Energy University addresses important energy efficiency issues and offers methodologies for implementing safe, reliable and cost effective measures that are shared through 115,000 courses in 165 countries and 12 languages," said Cave. "In Malaysia, the curriculum is endorsed and recognised by Suruhanjaya Tenaga as it is fully aligned with the national agenda towards meeting its Copenhagen promise by 2020. Having Energy University as a resource goes a long way in getting more electrical energy managers trained in knowledge necessary to meet Suruhanjaya Tenaga's requirements for intensive energy-consuming industries."
He added that in its outreach efforts, Schneider Electric also placed emphasis on equipping young talents with the knowledge of innovative energy management. In the past three years, Schneider Electric has led the Schneider Electric University Challenge - a competition designed to inspire and challenge engineering students in Malaysia to solve practical energy usage problems. Through the annual competition, more than one thousand future engineers have been exposed to energy efficient solutions and sustainable practices.
In addition, through its Luli campaign, Schneider Electric employees in Malaysia donate the equivalent of two hours of their salary to a charity of their choice and provide support towards disadvantaged children in less fortunate communities. In the past three years, Schneider Electric has been supporting the Montfort Youth Centre under Luli, donating not only part of their salary but also their time and expertise in training youth in efficient energy management practices.
