Firaxis Games is best known for its PC-based bestsellers like XCOM: Enemy Unknown and the Civilization series, but now iOS gamers will have a chance to play along with the company's new strategy game, Haunted Hollow.
Firaxis is releasing the game as a free download later this spring, though it's a fitting release for Halloween. Both families and "horror enthusiasts" will enjoy the game, the company said, during which players build a spooky mansion full of characters straight from a Halloween movie marathon (witches, vampires, mummies--you get the idea).
The goal of game is to build up your mansion and use your monsters to scare villagers and earn resources. The more villagers you scare, the more coins you earn which you can then use to upgrade your monsters or gain access to new ones.
Gameplay is reminiscent to other mobile strategy games, such as Hero Academy, and each monster has its own set of skills and upgrades. For example, Ghost units start off weak and unable to defend themselves, but their upgraded forms boast venerable offensive capabilities.
You can play alone or compete against your friends in multi-player mode through Game Center or pass and play. You'll be able to download additional monsters as in-app purchases, and more monsters will be added over time.
This isn't Firaxis's first venture on iOS -- a version of Civilization is available on iTunes in partnership with 2K -- but it is the gaming heavyweight's first original game created just for iOS.
