A remarkable reduction of 11.1 percent in total carbon dioxide emissions was achieved during 2010 at its Malaysia operations, according to logistics firm DHL Express.
The Malaysia Express division also improved its carbon dioxide efficiency by 9.7 percent in 2010, compared to 2009, said DHL Express Malaysia managing director, David Ng. "The key behind this remarkable reduction of a double-digit year-on-year achievement was effective employee behavioural change."
"DHL is the first global logistics provider to set quantified carbon dioxide efficiency targets under its GoGreen programme," said Ng. "The programme, which was launched in 2007, aims to improve the company's overall carbon efficiency by 30 percent by 2020."
He said that to achieve this, DHL has put in place a clear roadmap to manage its carbon footprint from energy consumption in real estate and ground transport, as well as to measure the effectiveness of the abatement programmes implemented. "Through such initiatives the Express division at the Asia Pacific region level improved its carbon dioxide efficiency by 14.1 percent in 2010 compared to 2009. Carbon assessment was first introduced by DHL Express Asia Pacific in 2008 and has since developed into a robust carbon accounting process that covers more than 1,000 facilities in 27 markets across the Asia Pacific."
Ng said that in Malaysia, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak announced at the last Copenhagen Climate Conference that Malaysia would reduce its carbon emissions by 40 per cent by 2020, compared with 2005 levels. "In support of this pledge, and of the company's carbon dioxide targets, DHL Express Malaysia has already taken steps towards ensuring the long term sustainability of the environment by effectively managing its carbon footprint," said Ng.
"We are serious about managing the risks associated to climate change and will continue to make sustainable changes to the environment by following our GoGreen practices," he said. "We will continue to engage our employees in our change process and work with our customers who would like to ship with us using our GoGreen solutions. Every little effort put in by each individual goes a long way towards protecting and ensuring the sustainability of the environment."
