Computer firm Dell's eighth year of working for communities in Malaysia was marked by more than 3,300 staff team members, their friends and families who raised funds for three charities through the company's recent Dell Charity <engaged> event in Penang, Malaysia.
The event in Bayan Lepas, Penang, also included a new 5 km Fun Ride for cycling enthusiasts who prefer shorter distances in addition to the 5 km run, 2 km fun run and the 40 km ride from Dell's second Asia Pacific Customer Care Centre (APCC2) to the Dato' Simon Wong Technology Centre (SWTC).
Dell Malaysia managing director Goh Then Lai said last year the company raised a cumulative amount of more than RM1.1 million [US$350,00] for charity since its inaugural Charity <engaged> event in 2006. With this year's collection of RM 163,000 [US$51,650], Dell's total amount has exceeded RM1.26 million [US$400,000].
"Dell team members are continuously finding new and innovative ways to make a positive social impact through our corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives," Goh said. "The Dell Charity <engaged> event is one such initiative that fuels our efforts to serve and strengthen our community. Volunteerism continues to be a uniting force within our Dell family and this event encourages our team members to lend their unique skills while showing how they can make a difference".
"At Dell, we also believe in encouraging positive change and minimizing environmental impact," he said "Because of this, we will be participating in more CSR activities for the remainder of FY14, including the International Coastal Cleanup on Gurney Drive, Zoo Negara CSR, Global Hunger Relief Drive and our quarterly Institut Jantung Negara (IJN) visit."

The funds generated from this event will be used to provide food, shelter, clothing and education to the underprivileged children as well as to provide a new shelter for the stray animals, said Goh.
This year's Dell Charity <engaged> event saw more than 2,700 participants with 97 cycling enthusiasts signing up for the 5 km Fun Ride and 65 registrants for the 40 km ride. The event also served as a platform for Dell team members and their families to have a day of fun at the Family Day and Food Fiesta while contributing to a good cause.
Participants at the event had the opportunity to do their part in raising funds for the charities by purchasing food and beverages, phone accessories, books , toys and souvenirs at the booths at the Family Day and Food Fiesta organised by the Dell Women in Search of Excellence (WISE) team. Aside from these items, they also had the opportunity to dunk their directors and team members, and take home one of the adorable pets from SPCA, all in the name of charity.
