Consumer tech is 'a significant catalyst for change' in Malaysia

Avanade’s global study shows that the use of smartphones and tablets by employees in Malaysia is leading a global transformation of the nature of work and business.

A global study of C-level and IT decision makers by business technology solutions firm Avanade shows that Malaysian executives are leading a global transformation of the business world with the use of consumer technology.

Avanade Malaysia country manager Mac Ghani said the study showed that more than nine out of 10 (96 percent) of companies have changed at least one business process to benefit from mobile technologies compared to just 71 percent of companies surveyed globally.

"The nature of work and how business gets done is going through a transformation," said Ghani. "Consumer technologies in the workplace are a significant catalyst for this transformation, especially in Malaysia where we're already seeing employees using smartphones and tablets for both basic and advanced business functions."

"Executives are capitalising on the opportunity these technologies offer by adjusting business processes and updating policies with measurable results in areas such as customer service, profitable growth, happier employees and bringing new products and services to market faster," he said.

In Malaysia, more than seven in 10 companies (72 per cent) reported the majority of their employees now use personal computing devices in the workplace, said Ghani, adding that other key findings were that:

- Compared to 54 percent globally, 76 per cent of Malaysian companies report the majority of their employees use smartphones for basic work tasks such as reading email, online documents and calendar invitations. 

- Tablet usage in the workplace is fast on the rise, especially in Malaysia where 60 percent reported that the majority of employees are using tablets for basic work functions, almost doubling the global average of 33 percent.

Conducted between 20 August and 13 September 2012 by Wakefield Research, the survey polled 599 C-level executives, business unit leaders, and IT decision makers, ages 18 and older, at the top companies in the following countries: U.S., Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Malaysia, the Netherlands, Norway, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the U.K.

"Interestingly, Malaysia reports a staggering 96 percent of at least one employee or more who uses tablets for advanced business functions, such as CRM [customer relationship management], project management, content creation and data analysis," Ghani said.

Traditionally, technology use at work has been largely dictated by business requirements. Executives authorised technology purchases based on corporate needs and objectives. Avanade's study indicated that this has changed from enterprise-driven to employee-driven technologies, especially in the area of mobile devices and consumer technologies.
