The Singapore Police Force (SPF) said that it has received several reports of victims receiving calls from anonymous persons claiming to be from the technical support sections of major software companies.
In a crime advisory released on Jan 6, SPF said that the callers would inform the victims that their computers required security or software updates, and that the victims should download and install one or more software from the Internet.
Victims were also asked to provide the software user account identification codes and passwords to the caller. In some cases, victims were even instructed to enter some commands into their computers.
Following the call, some victims observed that their computers were remotely controlled or some of their files were deleted. The callers would then convince the victims to buy additional software by making online payments or by providing their credit card details.
As a form of crime prevention, SPF advises the public to ignore such calls, and to never make any payment or reveal credit card or bank account details to such callers.
In the event that you have already followed any of the caller's instructions, SPF suggests that you immediately change your computer's log in password and all other passwords associated with your online accounts, especially your online banking and credit card passwords. Where possible, try changing the passwords from another computer other than the affected one.
Lastly, scan your computer with a commercial anti-virus or anti-malware software to find out if any malware has been installed on your computer.
