Exploit Technologies Pte Ltd (ETPL), the technology transfer arm of Singapore’s Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) presented two wearable technology displays titled “Next-to-the-Skin” Technology Exhibition, and Smart Wear Runway Showcase yesterday.
Held in conjunction with Startup Asia 2014, the exhibition featured technology prototypes and fashion concepts.
The “Next-to-the-Skin” Technology Exhibition showcased 10 early prototypes that incorporated A*STAR technologies. According to its media statement, these prototypes married science and design to produce a technically and economically viable product.
“Bringing together our scientists, designers, manufacturers and even investors early allows us to understand market needs, fine tune or even change our product offerings, said Philip Lim, Chief Executive Officer of ETPL. “Such platforms encourage more people from academia and industry to collaborate with us to prototype viable ideas.”
As for the Smart Wear Runway Showcase, A*STAR researchers partnered with students from Nanyang Technological University (NTU) to integrate wearable technologies and fashion into unique pieces.
20 different outfits were modeled onstage, some of which incorporated technologies from A*STAR’s Institute of Materials Research and Engineering (IMRE). For instance, the outfit “Scintillation” used luminescent silk to reinforce the design concept; while “ἀήρ” (a Greek word which means air) used phase change materials, which have the ability to absorb and dissipate heat efficiently to produce a self-cooling effect for the wearer.
“We have heard about technology companies that embrace design. Now, it is the reverse and designers today have a comprehensive toolbox of technologies to experiment with. We are excited to be catalysing this process,” said Lim.
This event showcased 10 prototype pitches, jointly developed by A*STAR’s Data Storage Institute (DSI), Institute for Infocomm Research (I2R) and Institute of Materials Research and Engineering (IMRE), as well as designers from Design Sojourn Pte. Ltd and M Design Solutions Pte. Ltd.
