As expected, Apple took the wraps off it's fifth-generation iPad, the iPad Air, and the second generation iPad mini. The latter is called the iPad mini with Retina display but will be more commonly referred to as the iPad mini 2. See also: New iPad 5 and iPad mini 2 launch event live
iPad Air (aka iPad 5)
The iPad Air is now in it's fifth-generation (how did that happen?). The full-sized iPad still has a 9.7 in Retina screen but work has been done on the casing of the tablet to make it thinner, lighter and easier to hold. It now shares the styling introduced with the original iPad mini with 43 percent bezels (43 percent smaller) and a squarer shape. Apple's iPad Air is just 7.5 mm thick, compared to 9.4 mm, and weighs just 454 g. Inside is the A7 64-bit processor which was introduced with the iPhone 5S. Apple says its twice the performance in processing and graphics compared to the iPad 4. When compared to the original iPad those numbers rise to eight times and seventy two times.
The latest iOS tablet has a 5 Mp rear iSight camera, new FaceTime HD camera, dual microphones for audio capture and Siri. It retains the 10 hour battery life of the previous generation.
You'll be able to get your hands on the iPad Air on 1 November with the same pricing as the iPad 4, starting at £399. Apple has decided to discontinue the iPad 4 but will keep the iPad 2 on sale from £329 for those that want a full-sized iPad at a cheaper price point.
iPad mini 2 (iPad mini with Retina display)
As per the leaked information and speculation, the iPad mini 2 has a Retina quality screen, better cameras and a more powerful processor. The screen is still 7.9 in but now has an improved resolution of 2048 x 1536.
Like the iPad Air, it has Apple's A7 chip, 5 Mp iSight camera and 10 hour battery life. The A7 processor means it's four times faster than its predecessor in terms of processing power and eight times better for graphics, according to Apple.
It also comes in silver/white and space grey/black. It will ship 'later in November' with a new price of £319 for Wi-Fi only - an increase of £50. The original iPad mini will remain on sale in 16GB only at a new lower price of £249 instead of £269.
Both the iPad Air and iPad mini 2 will come pre-loaded with iOS 7 but a small shock is that neither have the Touch ID fingerprint scanner which was introduced with the iPhone 5S.
