Sauber F1 Team simplifies management with NetApp

Anuradha Shukla | Sept. 16, 2016
The move reduces the F1 team's IT costs and freed up resources for racing technology by utilising storage efficiency.

Formula 1 (F1) Motorsport company Sauber Motorsport AG has simplified its management with NetApp as standard storage.

Sauber Motorsport AG has also been able to consolidate all data services with a NetApp FAS8040 system that is implemented as the central storage with 720TB gross capacity.

Prior to the implementation, Sauber was searching for a flexible, and uniform storage infrastructure as a basis for complete IT services in technology, business, and administration.

Deployment of NetApp has resulted in several benefits such as reduction of IT costs and freed up resources for racing technology by utilising storage efficiency.

"Without NetApp, and with only conventional technology, a data centre of this type would be extremely difficult to realise, and the cost of resources would certainly be higher," said Magnus Frey head of IT, Sauber Motorsport AG.

Mobile data centre

Sauber Motorsport AG has deployed a mobile data centre on the racing circuit, thanks to the FlexPod solution with NetApp, Cisco, and VMware.

The solution has enabled business continuity for the company with 24/7 storage utilisation.

Thanks to NetApp as standard storage, Sauber Motorsport AG benefits significantly from uniform management to deduplication to Snapshot backup.

More frequent backup of file versions and immediate file restores have helped avoid many hours of extra work, which was met with great enthusiasm from the design team.

"Sauber Motorsport AG and NetApp are both highly innovative companies that pay attention to quality and reliability," said Frey. "We can see how NetApp continues to develop its products, as well as the benefit that we get from them. With the upgrade to the current model, we can also use the NetApp Flash Cache technology and benefit from a performance boost. This also contributes to our productivity and efficiency."
