Powering future data centres

CIO Asia takes a look at why DC/OS is necessary to support modern enterprise apps.

"As for developers, DC/OS makes it simple to deploy and scale apps, from traditional bespoke applications to next generation microservice applications," Lai Weng Yew, Vice President, Business Application Services, NCS, said.

He continued: "DC/OS further enhances the DevOps story as it supports easy installation and operation of popular services such as GitLab, Jenkins and various static code analysis (SCA) tools, enabling powerful continuous integration (CI) / continuous delivery (CD) experience. Moreover, DC/OS enables developers to embrace new capabilities from serverless computing to real-time data processing, as it is very easy to deploy such necessary technologies."

So what are the overall business benefits of using DC/OS?

Firstly, organisations can attain highly effective operations, where they will gain the efficiency, automation, reliability and scale of a Google-like infrastructure without the complexity and specialised expertise.  

Secondly, they will gain developer agility, enabling them to accelerate time to value of new services. 

Finally, they can achieve data agility, thus enabling apps and services that can capture value from ubiquitous data. 

 

Transitioning towards DC/OS

According to Mesosphere, organisations will take different approaches to adopt the DC/OS model, depending on their operational readiness and infrastructure needs.

For organisations that are rolling out customer-facing services based on the modern enterprise app, and recognise the need for a next generation infrastructure and operating model, they will develop and operate all modern enterprise apps entirely on DC/OS environments.

Meanwhile, organisations that are already running siloes of big data and microservices environments can roll out DC/OS in phases. They will first transit stateless microservices-based apps, followed by analytics, and later on more complex stateful services to DC/OS.

As for conservative organisations, they can transit workloads to DC/OS but run them as statically partitioned at the start. This approach immediately provides a more scalable infrastructure, while enabling elastic scaling and modern applications when the organisation is ready in future.

As a final word of advice, Lai said: "Expanding physical data centres and co-location is expensive in Asia so efficient operation of workloads will result in massive cost savings for enterprises. It is very important for organisations to draft infrastructure and application transformation by adopting the DC/OS platform."
