Lexmark simplifies Malaysian university’s printing system

AvantiKumar | Aug. 15, 2011
Printing and imaging solutions provider Lexmark International (Malaysia) has helped to streamline Universiti Putra Malaysia’s printing infrastructure.

"Prior to the implementation of Lexmark's smart printing solutions, UPM students had to rely on the services of photocopying shops around the campus premises and printing was isolated to functioning machines in the main and faculty libraries," he said.

Universiti Putra Malaysia, or UPM, is a public university located in central Peninsular Malaysia, close to the capital city, Kuala Lumpur. It was formerly known as Universiti Pertanian Malaysia or Agricultural University of Malaysia. UPM is a research university offering undergraduate and postgraduate courses with a research focus on agricultural sciences and its related fields.

Heavy usage caused malfunctions

"We had endless problems maintaining our photocopiers cum printers as the machines would malfunction ever so often as a result of heavy usage," said the university Sultan Abdul Samad Library chief librarian, Amir Hussain. "Paper jams and broken glass due to incessant pressing of heavy periodicals on the glass surface of photocopiers were common complaints. During such downtime, students had to drive out to the nearest photocopying shop outside the campus to complete their printing tasks. This proved to be a major inconvenience especially for our international students who do not have the convenience of their own transportation."

"UPM has more than 26,000 students and staff, of which about 30 per cent of the students use printing and photocopying services within the university on a regular basis," said Amir. "An average of 70,000  printing jobs is done on a monthly basis. Branch libraries that have been equipped with Lexmark printers include the Engineering Library, the Medical and Health Sciences Library, and the Veterinary Science Library."

"With the introduction of the smart printing solution, technical downtime has been vastly reduced, we have had far fewer complaints from students, and no further need for additional human resource to provide technical support and less asset management worries as Ambang Ideal manages all the Lexmark MFPs [multi-function printers] and the supply of the consumables," he said.
