IBM Malaysia regains server market leadership

IBM is ranked number one in Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Philippines and Thailand, according to IDC’s fourth quarter 2011 trackers for Asia/Pacific enterprise server and external disk storage systems.

IBM has grabbed back server market leadership during 2011 in Malaysia, according to analyst firm IDC's fourth quarter 2011 trackers for Asia/Pacific Quarterly Enterprise Server and Asia/Pacific Quarterly External Disk Storage Systems.

Speaking on 3 April  2012, IBM Malaysia general manager, systems & technology group, Hemanth Kumar Kalikiri said the company regained the top server spot with a market share of 35.6 percent, a 4.0 point leadership position above the next closest competitor for Q4 2011, according to IDC's results, which were released in March 2012.

Kalikiri said that IBM was also ranked number one in the following server market segments in Malaysia for the same period for:

High-end Enterprise (US$250k+ servers) segment with 59.3 percent revenue share and 36.0 points higher than the next closest competitor;
RISC and EPIC servers segment with 51.3 percent revenue share and 17.0 points higher than the next closest competitor; and
Non-x86 Unix server revenue share at 49.4 percent and 14.0 points higher than the next closest competitor.

"Our hard work throughout the year paid off beautifully when we overtook the competition and regained the leadership position in the server space," he said. "The market interest in high-end servers remains strong and we expect the momentum to continue in 2012 as clients adopt smarter computing solutions at the workplace."

Kalikiri said that IBM introduced its Smarter Computing approach to information technology last year as a way for organisations to realise greater efficiencies, improved reliability, and better performance, at lower costs. "The strategy centers around three fundamental aspects: leveraging analytics to exploit vast amounts of data for business goals; utilising optimised systems that are designed for specific tasks; and managing as much of the IT as possible with cloud-computing technologies."

"IBM also sustained leadership momentum within the server market in ASEAN when it gained a 40 percent market share revenue, a strong 9.2 points higher than the next closest competitor," he said. "The company also grabbed the market leadership for ASEAN in the external disk storage segment when it captured 26 percent of the revenue share for Q4 2011, a 4.5 point gain above the next closest competitor."
