When cloud meets 'big data'

AvantiKumar | July 21, 2011
Opportunities for Malaysia with the intersection of cloud computing and 'big data', says EMC.

"For instance, EMC is now 90 percent virtualised," he said. "Companies also need to have the infrastructure to adopt users' own devices. About 15 billion downloads from the Apple's AppStore shows that applications that are more lean and fast are in demand. Also, user paradigm is changing especially with touch screens and mobile devices."

"'Big data' is the ability to use data from multiple sources and to cross correlate and run analytics on different data," said Webster. "An example of how this could be used is the tracking of the growth of industrialisation in Africa or to take data sets from different dataware to study how to slow the spread of diabetes in North America.

The sources of data are expanding dramatically and are expected to grow 50 times in the next 10 years. Both the challenge and the opportunity is what do you with 'big data'."

"EMC is focused on providing the technology to support the use of 'big data' with storage and application solutions such as Greenplum," he said. "The company believes the use of 'big data' will add value to businesses in many sectors including oil & gas and financial services."
