ICT leaders from industry and government met in Sydney today in a bid to deliver a private government Cloud through the government's new datacentres in Silverwater and Unanderra.
The GovDC event was an opportunity for industry and ICT leaders across government to get together and discuss what the possibilities are for delivering services through the more streamlined Cloud model.
The new data centres are designed to accommodate industry providers who wish to provide on-premise Cloud services as part of the GovDC Marketplace. Finance minister, Andrew Constance, said the recently opened datacentres had potential to streamline and improve services offered by the Australian Government. "The new centres have allowed us to create a shared pool of ICT systems and infrastructure to provide services for government agencies, and we are currently in the process of transitioning services between the older agency-based legacy systems to the new whole-of-government facilities," he said. "The new datacentres have the capability and capacity for private providers to deliver services and programs to agencies through a private government Cloud." He said the Cloud would act as a 'marketplace' where government agencies could source reliable infrastructure, platform and software all as a service from existing shared service and other third party providers.
Anchor tenants including NSW Health, the Departments of Education and Communities, Corrective Services, and Finance and Services have already started using the new datacentres.
More agencies will transition across in the next 12 months. Mr Constance said the newly established Cloud marketplace provided a valuable opportunity for smaller third party companies as well as large-scale service providers. "As services are delivered through a central location, economies of scale aren't such a big issue which means smaller locally based specialist companies are able to remain competitive," he said. Representatives from more than 50 local and international companies registered to participate in the GovDC Marketplace and attended the event.
