Most civil servants unsure how to use government's CloudStore

The G-Cloud is now on its third iteration and has this week been placed under the control of GDS

Three-quarters of civil servants are still not confident about how to use the government's cloud procurement platform CloudStore, despite the G-Cloud now being on its third framework.

The uncertainty will not be good news for the government, which says CloudStore offers cost savings, and agile and scalable IT systems.

Eduserv, the not-for-profit IT services provider for the public sector, and DODS, the political information and communication specialist, questioned 529 civil servants about CloudStore.

The research found, that whilst almost half (47 percent) of respondents "understood what the CloudStore could offer them", over two thirds (72 percent) said they "still aren't confident about how to use it".

"The research highlights that there is still a level of consultancy which needs to be done within the public sector to ensure organisations understand which cloud solutions best fit their needs and solve their challenges", said the two organisations.

Andrew Hawkins, business development director at Eduserv, said: "With G-Cloud iii already being rolled out, I would have liked to have seen more being done to ensure civil servants are confident about what it can do and how it can be implemented."

He added: "With more information and guidance from the Cabinet Office and cloud providers within the framework, we should see them build the confidence and knowledge they need to adopt the cloud."

The research also highlighted that 71 percent of respondents were unsure whether the framework creates more work for them or not, "further underlining the need for better communication with civil servants on how cloud services can solve their problems", said Eduserv and DODS.
