Customers creating web and mobile apps can now integrate an extra layer of security into the Azure environment with the new Web application firewall solution introduced by cloud-connected security and storage solutions provider Barracuda Malaysia.

Thiban Darmalingam, regional manager for Barracuda in Malaysia, said that the solution is the first web application firewall to be approved by productivity company Microsoft for integration into the Azure App service.

"The rapid transition to cloud platforms like Microsoft Azure offers many great benefits for customers, however, attention to security is still required in order to ensure cloud assets and applications remain protected," said Darmalingam.

The Barracuda Web Application Firewall has been developed to help meet that security need to better protect dynamic web applications, he said.

Darmalingam said Barracuda's Firewall will be able to provide protection when "traditional security models are challenged by modern web programming techniques, including JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) and Representation State Transfer (REST). Barracuda Web Application Firewall will protect three types of Azure Apps - Web Apps, Mobile Apps, and API Apps."

"We're excited to bring this additional capability to help our mutual customers take advantage of the cloud, and we look forward to continued success in our valued relationship with Microsoft," he said.

Any platform

Darmalingam added that customers can use the Barracuda Web Application Firewall to augment security for applications developed on any platform through the Azure App Service.

Some of the benefits include:

  • Security-enhanced Deployments - Barracuda Web Application Firewalls are easily deployed into the Azure App Service environment and automatically add an extra layer of security.
  • Security for REST / JSON based APIs - Azure API Gateway can be augmented with Barracuda Web Application Firewall to provide additional application layer security for REST / JSON based-APIs.

"Microsoft Azure App Service makes the building of cloud hosted web and mobile applications even easier," said Darmalingam.

"Barracuda and Microsoft have a shared interest of helping our mutual customers take advantage of the cloud to deliver great mobile and web experiences that engage and connect with their customers, while maintaining a strong security posture," he said.

Barracuda Web Application Firewall in Azure is now available in the Microsoft Azure Marketplace as part of the Microsoft Azure Certified program. Customers can purchase hourly Pay-As-You-Go (PAYG) or Bring-Your-Own-License (BYOL) subscriptions.
