An imminent inflection point is about to come next year, warned David Neo, senior director of sales engineering of Riverbed Technology Asia Pacific and Japan as he took to the stage.
With that, he meant that as up to 80 percent of end-user traffic will move to the WAN, it will result in at least half of hyper-converged solutions to experience end-user dissatisfaction due to the failure to meet business needs.

Citing a report from Forrester Consulting, he cautioned the problems organisations often face when leaving infrastructure at the branch since more than half of them have at least half of their data at the edge. Among which, the lack of control, management difficulties, poor backup and increase costs stood out as major hazards for organisations.
For organisations outraged over existing poor consolidation experiences, Neo offered effective consolidation solutions as he believes its ability to shrink data by up to 95 percent while providing LAN to LAN-like performance over the WAN.
Specifically, he pointed to Riverbed Granite, an industry-first technology that offers centralised IT control for data centre storage while extending the data centre SAN, over the WAN, to the branch office. It is also the first time that computer and storage can be separated, according to Neo.
"Granite does for edge servers what VDI has done for desktops," he added. "It enables you to consolidate all the branch storage back to the data centre and then project those LUNs up to the branch office, without a physical footprint."
Scalability in storage
Meanwhile, the evolution of data centre to optimise storage was illustrated by Joubert Uriarte, technical consultant from NetApp.
While performance and efficiency were innovations that have transformed businesses till 2010, scale has been the driving innovation since then till 2012. Scaling has resulted in the rising importance of thin provisioning as regular volume no longer does the job. More so, with the fast moving nature of technology that makes storage migration a chore.

"How do you move from one storage to the next? You don't know how long that technology nowadays last for? Two years from now, there is a new product out there," he added.
