HDS shows off Big Data cloud strategy

Jack Loo | April 9, 2012
The storage expert touts three-tier cloud plan.

Increasing server and desktop virtualisation brings with it increased need to scale up the organisation's storage system without disruption to the business operations. To meet the scale-up demand, modular storage systems will need to be replaced by enterprise storage to service the tier 1 demands of virtual servers. Organisations will be exploring new model of storage scaling that allow them the flexibility & speed to scale up, or down to meet business demand.

We also will see consolidation giving way to convergence. Over the past few years, IT has focused on consolidation and much of the low-hanging fruit has now been consolidated. In order to gain further cost savings, the focus should be on convergence of servers, storages, networks, and applications.

While consolidation was mostly about reducing acquisition costs, convergence is more focused on reducing operational costs. Convergence reduces the cost of provisioning, migrating, load balancing, and overall management of infrastructure, while providing faster time to implementation and application delivery.
