Cloud services go mainstream in healthcare

CIOs who previously eschewed the cloud because vendors wouldn't protect federally regulated patient information are growing increasingly comfortable with the technology.

BIDMC’s Halamka says it's inevitable that more of his peers will move to the cloud. As healthcare adopts more cloud software, vendors won’t hesitate to sign the necessary BAAs.

"In five years, the IT department will be replaced with the 'Cloud Services' department and the CIO will be the air traffic controller to identify and coordinate the services procured," Halamka wrote in his popular Geekdoctor blog last month.
