Acronis set to grow in India and China

After winning customers in Japan, Australia, New Zealand and Singapore, the data backup company wants to grow in India and China, says John Zanni, Senior Vice President & Head of Global Cloud Business at Acronis

"Cloud has come a long way in the last ten years because of two reasons: lower cost of entry and rapid adoption," John Zanni, Senior Vice President & Head of Global Cloud Business at Acronis, told Computerworld Singapore during an interview in April.

John Zanni is based in the USA and is responsible for the strategy and growth of Acronis' cloud and hosting business. Previously he was Service Providers Chief Marketing Officer at Parallels.

There is one more critical use of cloud, he pointed out, and that is data back-up and business continuity. Legislation like Personal Data Protection Act forces companies to back up data locally and that's where Acronis plays an important role in the market. "There are 70 data sovereignty laws in Asia alone."

The company, which has its APAC headquarters in Singapore, focuses on data protection using the cloud. The company sets the standard for New Generation Data Protection through its backup, disaster recovery, and secure access solution.

Acronis was founded in 2002 and has over 5 million consumers and 300,000 businesses in over 130 countries. Some of their well-known customers are Oxford University, BT Ireland, BAE Systems and Pentagon Federal Credit Union.

According to Zanni, Acronis has zeroed in on the small medium business segment of the market in APAC.

"Our solution is the easiest to use and it provides a complete suite of solutions for backups and data recovery," he said.

In the last couple of years, Zanni claimed that the company has done very well in the region, especially in Japan, Australia, New Zealand and Singapore.

In Japan, for example, the company has even launched a very innovative programme: Disaster Recovery as a Service.

When this reporter asked him where he sees his next tier of growth, he said, India and China.

Talking about challenges in Asia, he said that the biggest challenge is the market fragmentation. "There is no one Asia, and the market behaves differently in different Asian countries" he said.  There is a need for education too, he added, especially among the SMBs regarding the significance and benefits of cloud-based date protection and recovery solutions.  "Today no company, big or small, is safe from data breaches and if they don't have data protection plans in place, the consequences could be disastrous."
