Storage maker builds fast SSD to prepare for life after NAND flash

Stephen Lawson | Aug. 5, 2014
Storage technologies much faster than NAND flash aren't expected to reach most smartphones and data centers for years, but preparations are already underway in order to make the most of them when they arrive.

"NVMe will evolve, right? So who knows?" Hansen said.

Also at Flash Memory Summit, HGST introduced its FlashMAX III PCIe accelerator, its third-generation server flash card for speeding up databases and other applications, and ServerCache, software for turning any SSD on a server into a cache. ServerCache uses technology derived from HGST's Velobit acquisition for data reduction so SSD capacity can be used more efficiently, Hansen said. The FlashMAX III is set to ship in the current quarter, and ServerCache is available now for US$995 per physical server, with a free 30-day trial download.
