KUALA LUMPUR, 13 JUNE 2010 -- Internet threats are continuing to grow in sophistication as well as quantity in Asia, according to unified threat management (UTM) solutions provider Fortinet Malaysia.
"The Internet threats that customers face continue to grow in quantity as well as 'quality' as attackers are becoming even more sophisticated," said Fortinet Malaysia country manager, Eryin Halmen.
Companies need to use an UTM approach as this allows companies to manage policies as well as meet compliance requirements, which is especially important for firms in the financial services sector, said Halmen.
"Manageability and performance are the key factors that customers want to know about when it comes to choosing UTM solutions, he said, during the announcement of two new flagship multi-threat security appliances that consolidate firewall and Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) performance.
To help companies meet the criteria, the two new solutions the FortiGate-3950B, FortiGate-3951B and FMC-XD2 products will begin shipping this quarter, while the FMC-XG2 product will begin shipping in the third quarter, and both offer advanced application-based security protection, purpose-built for large enterprises, he said.
Fortinet, which has more than 5,000 channel partners around the world, became a public-listed company in November 2009 on NASDAQ. In 2009, the company posted revenue of US$252 million, which is 19 per cent year-on-year growth, and in the first quarter of 2010, the revenue is US$69.8 million, which is up 29 per cent year on year.
Integrated threat protection is a must
"Integrated threat protection is a must for organisations today, said Halmen. For example, the new FortiGate 3950B series 10-GbE multi-threat security appliance, which delivers up to 120Gbps [gigabits per second] of low-latency firewall inspection performance, helps to secure the most demanding enterprise environments."
Both models are standalone, non-chassis units, which are rack-mountable in data centres, he said.
"This new model has FMC [Fortinet mezzanine card], which is a more advanced card slot," said Halmen said. This delivers additional processing power that can be distributed across the entire appliance via the ISF [integrated switch fabric], resulting in a flow of data without bottlenecks."
"Solutions can also be customised to suit different user needs," he said. "Telcos and banks are especially demanding when it comes to needing multiple sessions. For example, our new flagship, FortiGate 3950B, delivers 10 million concurrent sessions."
"In addition to the technical specifications offered by our solutions, training and support is critical," he said. We have different levels of support, which includes user customisation delivered by our local teams. In addition, Fortinet regards Kuala Lumpur as an important centre in Asia, and the staff here includes an R&D team."
Growth of UTM market
Analyst firm Frost & Sullivan's Malaysia research analyst, ICT practice Asia Pacific, Phoenix Tran, said: Fortinet is ranked as UTM market leader with 14.4 per cent market share [third quarter, 2009].
By 2011, UTM will be the largest single market with a CAGR [compound annual growth rate] of 26.2 per cent, compared to the firewall and VPN [virtual private network] market, which is dropping [-25 to 0 per cent CAGR], said Tran.
"In Malaysia, there has been a shift in the threat landscape, which tends to mirror the global environment, as threats have changed from being overt to covert, and have become more targetted, blended attacks," she said, adding that threats include network intrusion, malware, bank fraud, data leakage and loss.
"In addition, as there is an increasing use of IT in business, which has led to more exposure to threats," Tran said. "In 2008-2009, there has been a growth of managed IT services as companies need to have 24x7 secure services."
"The economics downturn has also encouraged companies to take up outsourced and managed IT services," she said. "Budget and time constraints along with in-house disparate systems are additional drivers for this shift."
"Large Malaysia-based enterprise customers in particular are looking for different functions in one appliance as part of an integrated solution, which has fuelled the growth in the local UTM market," said Tran.
