Silver Peak gives market more options to optimise WAN

Veronica C. Silva | Sept. 26, 2011
New WAN appliances were announced for both entry-level and high-capacity implementation.

With more organisations looking to maximise their network capacity, a US company is giving the enterprise market more options to optimise their wide area network (WAN).

California's Silver Peak recently introduced new WAN appliances for two extreme market segments --  entry-level and high-capacity.

The Silver Peak VX-Xpress (VX-X) is a fully-functional entry-level virtual appliance for companies getting started with WAN optimisation or for optimising their smallest branch or remote offices. It can be downloaded from the company website for free, and supports 4 Mbps of WAN bandwidth with 8,000 simultaneous sessions.

"The Silver Peak VX-Xpress breaks the cost and deployment barriers-to-entry for WAN optimisation," said Larry Cormier, senior vice president of worldwide marketing, Silver Peak.  "Whether you are just getting your feet wet in WAN optimisation, or you are a networking veteran, Silver Peak VX-Xpress is the most accessible and affordable option for optimising applications between branch and remote offices."

More power

Silver Peak also recently introduced an appliance that can support 1 Gbps of WAN throughput, which the company said is"20 times more than any other virtual WAN optimisation product." The Silver Peak VRX-8 is the company's "highest-capacity virtual WAN optimisation appliance" designed for data centres.

Capable of supporting up to 256,000 simultaneous user sessions, the VRX-8 is also ideal for data centres built for disaster recovery and business continuity, application centralisation, virtual desktop infrastructures (VDI), and cloud computing.

Both solutions are based on the company's virtual acceleration open architecture (VXOA) which allows for a more convenient, flexible, and low-cost option for deploying WAN optimisation on a wide variety of industry standard hardware platforms and hypervisors. Aside from data centres and remote offices, the virtual architecture can also be deployed on the cloud.

Silver Peak is offering the VRX-8 through its reseller partner network at list prices which the company said are less than half the price of competing products.
