Q&A: Preservation and migration

Zafar Anjum | Sept. 3, 2013
How active is A10 Networks in this region and how is the networking solutions provider helping companies in IPv4 preservation and IPv4-IPv6 migration? Its President, CEO and VP of South APAC, Hayato Koeda, explains.

Are you also working closely with the government and companies in Singapore and the region to overcome the impending shortage of IPv4 addresses? What challenges do companies face in migrating from IPv4 to IPv6?

Yes, we are working with some organisations on their IPv6 migration. One challenge they face is that there is no backward compatibility between IPv4 and IPv6, so companies need to deploy IPv4-IPv6 migration technology to translate IPv4 traffic into IPv6 and vice versa. We have migration technologies such as DS-Lite, 6RD, 464XLAT, NAT64/DNS64. We also have a CGNAT feature to preserve IPv4 addresses so that customers can continue to run existing services before migrating to IPv6. Companies need to select an appropriate approach for their current network configuration. The biggest challenge is that there is no single technology or solution for everyone and a different solution may be required to run at the same time during the migration phase.

A10's Thunder Series Unified Application Service Gateways support all the IPv6 migration and IPv4 prevention technologies mentioned above and we are also able to provide them at the same time without any additional licence fees, so companies can deploy the system flexibly.

IPv6 migration devices also need high capacity and performance, because a lot of connections need to be translated. Our Thunder Series and ACOS architecture can offer high performance translation services with 150Gbps application throughput and 256 million concurrent sessions in a single 1 rack unit (RU) appliance.

Data centres are growing in the region but so are the security challenges. How do you help your customers in this area?

Many companies recently face many risks arising from DDoS attacks. A10's Thunder Series can provide high-performance DDoS protection and SLB/ADC functions at the same time. It can prevent over 200 million attacks per second with a 1 RU appliance without any impact on normal traffic. Thunder Series also provides Web Application Firewall (WAF), DNS Application Firewall, SSL Intercept, and Application Access Management (AAM). These premium security features are tightly integrated into ACOS without licences.
