A Philippine life insurer has recently started to upgrade its network infrastructure to be able to transact with its partners and customers across the archipelagic country of more than 7,000 islands.
Dimension Data, a member of the NTT Group, did not name the life insurer but described the company as having been in business for more than 60 years, and has life insurance partners of more than 7,400 across the country.
Dimension Data said the life insurer chose them because of their track record in the financial industry. Among the requirements of the life insurer in its infrastructure upgrade was that the network is resilient and reliable.
The life insurer is currently undergoing a three-phase network upgrading project which involves replacing routers and switches in the life insurer's three main office buildings and other branch offices nationwide.
"Given the vast distances between the branches, the multi-phase approach is a logical decision allowing us to better manage the upgrade process and deal with any issues that may occur along the way. This approach also enables us to ensure thorough testing of the installed equipment before it goes 'live'," said Lim Puay Koon, regional director, Southeast Asia, Dimension Data Asia Pacific.
Upgrading the core switches in the head office was part of the first phase of implementation, which also included upgrading the access switches across six floors, as well as the core routers.
The next phase will involve replacing routers and switches at the life insurer's Disaster Recovery Centre and another main office, about 7.5 km from the head office.
The final phase of the project, with an undisclosed date, will involve upgrading the remaining switches and routers located across Metro Manila as well as the provincial branches, the furthest of which is about 1,220 km away.
"Upgrading switches and routers can sometimes be a fairly routine exercise. But when the project is on a scale like this, the necessity of ensuring network uptime during the upgrade gives a new meaning to the word 'challenge'," said Lim.
Included in the project contract is a three-year in-warranty, and uptime support and maintenance service after the completion of the upgrade.
