MyRepublic is now offering 1Gbps broadband services to residential subscribers in Singapore starting from S$49.99 per month (US$39).
"With an average of 12 Internet-enabled devices in the home, and the explosion of multi-source high-definition streaming video across those devices, 100Mbps is becoming increasingly obsolete," said MyRepublic CEO Malcolm Rodrigues. MyRepublic's new 1Gbps service thus aims to make "ultra-fast fibre broadband accessible to everyone."
With this announcement, Singapore has become the first country to offer 1Gbps on a nationwide basis, with prices that are amongst the most affordable in the world, according to the International Telecoms Union (ITU). The republic has also entered the top-tier countries with ultra-fast internet connectivity, making it comparable to South Korea and Japan, according to MyRepublic's media statement.
To celebrate, MyRepublic will be holding a party at Ngee Ann City Civic Plaza this weekend (18 and 19 January 2014) to showcase the new 1Gps service.
MyRepublic was launched to challenge the long-held attitudes of dominant telcos in Singapore - SingTel, Starhub and M1 - around service experience, pricing and the enabling of increasingly independent content and application ecosystem. It has done so by offering competitively priced No-Contract plans, removing international traffic caps, and pioneering customised broadband plans for gamer and streamer segments over the last 18 months.
As one of MyRepublic's goal is to help build a "vibrant start-up community in Singapore," the company is launching the MyGigNation initiative. The initiative aims to deliver quality broadband as well as enable application developers and other industry players to transform the society.
One component of the initiative is the MyGigNation contest. Local companies are invited to submit a proposal on what they aim to develop on the MyGigNation network. The top 10 applications will be invited to develop and test their services in a MyRepublic-backed test lab. The best application or service, which will be selected in July 2014, will receive S$25,000 (US$19,671) in marketing support and will be co-marketed with MyRepublic across its various go-to market channels.
