China university upgrades campus network with Juniper solutions

Ocean University of China needed a cost-efficient, manageable network to support research and student data traffic demands.

A research university in China has opted to use Juniper Networks to upgrade its campus network to support its growth. 

Juniper Networks said the Ocean University of China (OUC) was looking for a high-performance yet easily manageable campus network to support its almost 35,000 students and staff. 

A university official said that given the thrust of the university, which specialises in oceanography and fisheries science, having a first class campus network and data centre was pertinent to its success. Thus, the university replaced its legacy system with a set of networking solutions that is capable of supporting increasing data traffic now and in the long-term. 

“For OUC to be a success it is important that we have a first-class campus network and data centre strategy. Juniper Networks has transformed our network from a problem into an asset. We now have a simplified, yet cost-effective high-performance solution that was easy to deploy and is easy to maintain,” said Xin Hua Long, director, Network Information Center, Ocean University of China. 

Simplified network 

Juniper has deployed the Juniper MX Series 3D Universal Edge Routers, EX Series Ethernet Switches and SRX Series Services Gateways to help OUC simplify its network while increasing capacity, flexibility and reliability.

The foundation for the campus network core is run by the Juniper Networks MX960 routers, which can scale up to 5.3 terabits per second (Tbps). 

For the university data centre, Juniper Networks offered its EX8208 switches to form a highly scalable network core, with EX4200 switches deployed as top-of-rack access devices. To help the university manage the switches collectively, the EX4200 switches are deployed in a Virtual Chassis configuration. 

“By eliminating the need for an aggregation switching layer, the two-layer data architecture enabled by Juniper’s Virtual Chassis technology reduces capital and operational costs while delivering low-latency, wire-speed performance,” Juniper Networks explained. 

Internet connection 

The MX960 Universal Edge Router and redundant Juniper Networks SRX5600 Services Gateways, which are each capable of 100 Gbps of firewall throughput, support and secure the OUC’s connection to the Internet. 

To manage the Juniper routers, switches and security platforms, OUC is using the Junos operating system running across all routing, switching and security platforms. 

Juniper Networks said universities such as the OUC are constantly challenged to ensure network uptime and secure their networks so that they can deliver their mandates for the long term. 

“Universities are continuously challenged to improve their teaching and learning environments, increase their research output and address the demands of faculty and students for better access to digital resources and applications. All these hinge on the quality of the network,” said Henry Zhu, operation area leader, Greater China Enterprise, Juniper Networks.
