They may be hundreds of miles across the globe, but Singapore soccer fans have recently expressed support for their favourite European teams via technology - through P2P streaming to be precise.
According to monitoring by Experian's online intelligence tool, Hitwise, more than half of the top 20 searches in Singapore contained the "Euro 2012" search terms, particularly referring to streaming sites.
Variations for the search terms included "Euro 2012 schedule," "Euro 2012 results," "watch Euro 2012 live free," "Euro 2012 live stream," "Euro 2012 live streaming free" and "Starhub Euro 2012."
Data for the week ending 23 June revealed a sharp spike in visits to live streaming or streaming software sites, with www.livesoccertv.com and www.sopcast.com registering more than 600 percent increase in traffic. This is despite access to live telecasts of Euro 2012 via pay-TV services, said Experian.
"Variations for the term "Euro 2012" on all search engines in Singapore saw a ten-fold increase within four weeks, from 26 May to 23 June," said Experian.
Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo and England's Wayne Rooney were the favourite Euro 2012 players searched by Singapore fans, with some fans even following tweets about the players.
2012 UEFA European Football Championship, commonly referred to as Euro 2012, ended 1 July with Spain defending their title with a 4-0 win against Italy.
