After teasing the feature several months ago, Google Play Music is finally ready to serve as the official hub for podcasts on Android.
Android Police uncovered an email from NPR that announced the news network’s podcast would launch April 18 in Google Play Music. The email notes the following:
Google will launch podcasts on Android and other platforms next Monday, April 18, inside of Google Play Music, a streaming service similar to Apple Music. Please note: this information is embargoed and should not be shared or promoted externally until Monday. NPR has worked with Google to ensure that public radio is represented in the Google Play environment. Learn more about adding your station’s podcasts to this new platform.
We first learned about Google’s plans to bring podcasts to Google Play back in October. Some Play Music subscribers saw them pop up inside the app in February, but there hasn’t been any official word since. We’ll let you know if it turns out to be the real deal this time.
The impact on you: If you like to have everything in one place, this new feature will allow you to keep your music collection and favorite podcasts inside of Google Play Music. However, if you’re using one of the four best podcast apps already out there, there may not be enough reason to make a switch, particularly if you use Spotify or another music service.
