Hillary Clinton joined the 21st century on Monday with her very first tweet--a possible sign that she is pondering a presidential run in 2016.
"Thanks for the inspiration @ASmith83 & @Sllambe -- I'll take it from here..." Clinton tweeted, adding the hashtag #tweetsfromhillary in a nod to the creators of the popular Texts From Hillary Tumblr. Clinton is no stranger to social media; she created her own Texts From Hillary submission last April, bringing the meme full circle.
Clinton has long been considered a likely candidate for the 2016 Democratic nomination, though the Benghazi scandal has caused her favorability ratings to drop a bit. Clinton's latest foray into social media is fueling the rumor mill. Clinton's Twitter bio is equal parts serious business and self-deprecating: "Wife, mom, lawyer, women & kids advocate, FLOAR, FLOTUS, U.S. Senator, SecState, author, dog owner, hair icon, pantsuit aficionado, glass ceiling cracker, TBD..."
It's that "to be determined" at the end that is setting off rampant speculation over Clinton's next career move.
More than 180,000 people have followed Clinton since she created her account Monday morning. She has tweeted just once and only follows five other accounts, including husband Bill and daughter Chelsea.
She doesn't, however, follow President Obama, who sent a welcoming tweet.
Bill Clinton also took ages to join Twitter, finally signing up in April after some help from Colbert Report host Stephen Colbert. (Clinton's account was initially @PrezBillyJeff; Clinton eventually settled on the more dignified @ BillClinton.)
It's unclear if Hillary will use her Twitter account like Bill does, as a platform for her philanthropic work, or if it will turn into vehicle for campaign messages. The informal inaugural tweet didn't lend much insight, but that tantalizing "TBD" dangling at the end of Clinton's bio hints at big plans.
