Consortium partners SynapSense and Equinix data centre in Singapore recently announced the findings of its green data centre project, which resulted in millions of dollars in energy savings.
SynapSense Corporation, a provider of energy efficient data centre solutions, worked with the Equinix data centre in Singapore to study how data centres can save energy.
The partners were one of the winners of last summer's Green Data Centre Innovation Challenge by the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA). The companies were selected to study how data centres in Singapore can improve energy efficiency by as much as 35 percent.
The two companies worked together for six months, and their work resulted in energy savings, which can translate to more than eight million kilowatt hours of energy or US$1.3 million (S$1.7 million) annually.
The savings came from Equinix implementing the SynapSense Data Center Optimization Platform, an energy efficient data centre infrastructure management (DCIM) solution. SynapSense said the solution features real-time Environmental Monitoring and Active Control to optimise data centre energy efficiency, while improving reliability.
Under the Equinix SG1 Cooling Energy Efficiency Project, the data centre implemented IDA's new SS564 Green Data Center Standard's cooling and power distribution energy efficiency metrics, with continuous real-time monitoring on the SynapSense Web Console.
With the SynapSense Data Center Optimization Platform, Equinix was able to establish baseline information of energy use in the data centre and metrics on air flow management. The SynapSense solution also helped Equinix track the cooling and power system's efficiency before and after the implementation of the energy efficiency measures.
Goh Thiam Poh, operations director, Equinix, said the SynapSense solution helped them exceed their goals for the project.
"Equinix is committed to supporting the Singapore energy efficiency objectives and we look forward to continuing to partner with SynapSense to realise such outstanding results in future projects," added Poh.
"Directly leveraging SynapSense technology and Equinix expertise, the results of our cooling efficiency project exceeded our expectations," said Bart Tichelman, chief executive officer, SynapSense. "We were pleased to partner with Equinix by providing the SynapSense Data Center Optimization Platform to help the Singapore government and Equinix achieve unprecedented data centre energy savings."
