"I get it daily that people want to use an iPad or an Android device, and they want it now. They are not prepared to wait and that is a challenge, we have to meet those expectations," he said.

"The capability and the knowledge of those users is growing exponentially; everybody is an ICT expert now."

The BYOD strategy, supported by an Airwatch mobile device management (MDM) solution, is currently in its early stages deployment with around 20 doctors trialling use of their own systems.

Despite some concerns around security, the main barrier to wider adoption is how the BYOD strategy is less around technology and more around governance.

"I think we are pretty comfortable with the technology and the MDM environment that we are running with," he said.

"There is probably the HR side we need to get into a bit more, in terms of the policy side of running that type of environment.

"It is more about the cultural aspect of someone bring their own laptop or phone to work, and what it actually means for a doctor to bring his own laptop work, and whether that helps him or hinders him."
