Intelligent cooling system for Malaysian data centres: Schneider Electric

Energy management specialist Schneider Electric Malaysia has launched the InRow Chilled Water Cooling 300mm system for medium to large data centres, which features a new  cooling system designed for modern, and increasingly high density, data centres.

APC by Schneider Electric Malaysia vice president John Atherton said modern data centres generate higher heat densities, which make adequate cooling more difficult because of the fluctuations caused by the increased IT load. "In today's data centres, traditional cooling approaches involve complex air distribution systems that tend to be unpredictable and leave many customers guessing where the cold air goes."

 "With InRow Chilled Water 300mm system, Schneider Electric has taken the guesswork out of data center cooling," said Atherton. "Placing the unit in the same row with the racks moves the source of cooling closer to the heat load."

"This minimises air mixing, provides a predictable cooling architecture and nearly eliminates the need for make-up humidification, typically required in data centers to deal with static electrical discharge that cool air could cause," he said.

Atherton said the InRow Chilled Water "is an air conditioning system with a horizontal airflow pattern specifically designed for hot aisle/cold aisle configurations in data centers. Warm exhaust air is drawn from the hot aisle, cooled, and distributed into the cold aisle, ensuring that equipment inlet temperatures stay constant and adequate for optimal operations."

 IT and telecoms market

He said that according to Research and Markets: Global Data Center Cooling Market Report 2013 - 2018, in 2013, the telecom and IT industries accounted for the largest share of total data centre cooling market, and the trend is expected to continue until 2018.

In Malaysia, Financial Services, Telecommunications, IT, Healthcare, Government and Oil and Gas, are some of the verticals where datacentre cooling finds applicability, said Atherton.

"The energy consumption of the data centre industry has continued to climb the ranks of priorities for data center owners, operators and the country at large," he said. "Tightened budgets also mean that companies in Malaysia have to start looking for ways to reduce energy costs."

Atherton said that when upgrading the existing - or designing - a new data centre with Schneider Electric's InRow Cooling as the primary cooling system, businesses can realise benefits by going with purely row cooling vs. a traditional approach.

Those benefits include:

  • Lower energy costs by avoiding the over-provisioning of perimeter cooling units, many of which have fixed-speed fans that chew up energy
  • Eliminating the cost of installing and maintaining a raised floor to distribute air to IT equipment.
  • No fighting between row and perimeter coolers
  • Lower capital expenses by eliminating over-conservative data centre designs with respect to cooling
  • Simpler redundancy by eliminating the need for redundant perimeter cooling units
  • Lower maintenance costs by eliminating maintenance contracts for perimeter coolers
