Singapore's Infocomm Development Authority (IDA) addressed key ICT themes that have the potential to impact Singapore's economy and society in the next three to five years at the Infocomm Technology Roadmap Symposium (ITR) today.

"This [symposium] will be a good opportunity to gain insight on the latest industry trends and opportunities, to generate new ideas and foster industry collaboration," said CEO of IDA, Ronnie Tay in his opening address to the 800-strong audience.

Through consultation with the IT industry players, including government agencies and researchers, IDA was able to identify nine key themes.

The themes are; Big data, Cloud computing, Cyber security, ICT and sustainability, Communications of the future, Social media, New digital economy, User interface and Internet of things.

IDA's year long research to determine the ITR is in the "collaborative" stage, according to chief technology officer for IDA, Leong Mun Yuen. "We welcome invaluable feedback and insights from the public to improve the roadmap," Leong noted.

"The spirit of the symposium is to create an opportunity for everyone to contribute to, and hence co-create the roadmap," Tay added.

The speakers at the symposium delved in depth into the nine themes but shared a common opinion; that people in the industry need to move further into the future. With the occurrence of the next paradigm shift in ICT, it is time to tackle the rapidly changing landscape with early adoption of infocomm technology in order to stay competitive.

"IT is no longer something that happens between the four walls of the server room," reiterated the vice president of IDC Insights-International, Cort Isernhagen.

ITR 2012 continues its open consultation until September 2012 and the final report will be published in November 2012 on the IDA website.
