According to the IDC Digital Universe study (2011), the amount of data doubles each year and by the end of 2012, it will exceed 1.8 zettabytes. Due to the sheer volume of data produced, the risk of loss is bigger. An average of one in one thousand computers lost data stored on it and cases are increasing. No data is truly protected because of hardware failure, human error, viruses and natural disasters are imminent.
More and more consumers and businesses are recognising the importance of backing up their data. However, many are often unaware of the processes and are led to believe preconceived notions about data recovery. These myths include cost concerns, basic misunderstandings about personal devices and data security which lead to ill-informed decisions hindering businesses from successful recovery of lost or damaged data.
Disruption because of data loss affects business productivity. In order to prevent this from happening or spending on overpriced unsuccessful data recoveries, we have compiled the most common recovery myths encountered.
"I back up my data, so my data is safe" / "My back up system is in place, so I don't need to worry about data loss"
Reality: Unfortunately, having a backup system in place is not a foolproof guarantee that any data will be secure in the event of a crisis. If consumers or businesses are not 100 percent sure how to back up data or how it actually works, chances are it is not done properly. Despite best efforts to prevent disasters with a backup system, data loss still happens. Accidental deletions of files, overwritten data, re-instalment of software and device upgrades are common risks faced when relying solely on a backup system.
"Professional data recovery is out of my price range" / "There are plenty of low cost data recovery that can get the job done"
Reality: There are a variety of low cost providers offering flat-rate recovery solution at the onset. As the recovery progresses, the fee increases as well with hidden costs. As the amount of time, difficulty and spare parts associated with the recovery increase, so does the cost, making an initial low-cost solution more expensive in the long run.
"My data is safe in the hands of my data recovery provider" / "My data is password protected, so I don't have to worry about it being compromised"
Reality: Do not assume that the data is safe just because a password is installed. Regardless of the scope of a recovery, consumers should ensure that the provider maintains formal process and security protocols. Typical standards would include a strict information security policy and a comprehensive annual SAS 70 Type II Certification. Consumers should also ensure that the chosen provider has a secure ISO-5/Class 100 cleanroom environment. Further, it is essential that the chosen recovery provider can recover encrypted data and return its original form.
