Building Malaysia's largest data centre

Interview: Teliti Datacentres and Hitachi Data Systems on the challenges of developing cloud-based services, backed by Malaysian government's PEMANDU.

We've been working in partnership with Teliti Datacentres for some time, on building a catalogue of cloud services that can be delivered to enterprise customers starting with something like storage-as-a-service where they can utilise storage on a pay-per-use basis, adapt to their business needs, growing and shrinking, and have that dynamic skill that only a business-quality provider like Teliti can provide. So in our view, it is providing high-quality service level-based solutions done in a way that you have on-demand pay-per-use.

In short, we are providing the hardware, the software and the management tools used to deliver that enterprise quality, the pay-per-use capabilities and the service management to meet that SLA.

 

What types of services will Teliti be offering?

1. co-location is the traditional service we will offer.

2. however our focus will be on providing managed services i.e platform-as-a-service, software-as-a-service, storage-as-a-service etc.

With cloud computing and virtualisation technologies, we can provide pay-per-use services that fit customers' operational budgets so they don't have to invest in hardware. We can target both enterprises and SMBs (small and medium businesses) with these services.

We are moving businesses' IT from a Capex (capital expenditure) to an Opex (operating expenditure) model primarily because IT has always been quick in terms of development and the time for refresh is getting shorter and shorter with new technologies. So as a service provider that has economies of scale, it makes sense for us to do that refresh on behalf of customers who can then focus on their core business while we focus on their IT infrastructure. Our cloud services complement their business operations to the point of being able to take care of some of the high Capex and move it down to an Opex model.

 

Based on the customers you are seeing, what are the specific industries in the Asia Pacific that are adopting the cloud?

Miki Sandorfi - Cloud is a fairly horizontal solution but in terms of going to market, there are benefits of a vertical approach, which allows us to take a cloud service and put together a solution that is appropriate for verticals such as healthcare, government, financial services and education. Each one has slightly different requirements so we take the cloud and align them to those verticals so that it is simple to deploy the cloud.

 

How do you address local business concerns about where their data is stored?

Miki Sandorfi - Locality and governance of information is becoming more important across all geographies. But it is also data centre practice that come into play. If I put my data into somebody else's data centre, how do I have assurances that it will be protected, secured and accessible to my business so I can remain in operation? That is another key differentiator that a provider like Teliti has in that they have audits around the data centre practice, and they can bring that to customers for assurance.
