VMware identifies opportunities in ASEAN

SINGAPORE, 30 MARCH 2011 - Significant virtualisation and consolidation opportunities exist in the ASEAN region, according to Ed Lenta, general manager, ASEAN, VMware.

He was speaking at the launch of SingTel’s hybrid cloud service PowerOn Compute, which features VMware’s vCloud Datacenter Services, earlier this week.

“In countries like Indonesia, Vietnam and Philippines, there are many companies which are looking at server consolidation and infrastructure refreshes,” said Lenta, as organisations seek to reduce hardware costs. He added that VMware is looking to enhance its presence with the recent opening of an office in Vietnam.

Lenta identified Thailand and Malaysia as markets that are more mature in terms of virtualisation efforts. “People have been going through server virtualisation for some time, and now it is not just about saving money,” he said.

Companies would be looking at not just virtualisation at an infrastructure level but virtualising systems like ERP and other business applications. “The discussion would be about improving the quality of service,” he said.

Singapore—the most sophisticated market in the region

Lenta ranked Singapore as the most sophisticated market in the region in terms of virtualisation. According to him, companies here have been through the stage of virtualising infrastructure and are looking to move into public as well as private clouds.

An earlier VMware survey conducted by Springboard Research found that more than half of the 646 ASEAN respondents indicated that a virtualised infrastructure is an essential building block for cloud computing.

“Companies here are now looking at things like chargeback services, capacity management, and working with service providers on cloud computing,” said Lenta. He also said that desktop virtualisation is another emerging trend in Singapore especially within the finance and public sectors.
