Telekom Malaysia R&D arm wins regional innovation award

The use of light to convey high speed broadband Internet was singled out by the regional telecoms award organisers in Singapore.

Telekom Malaysia's wholly owned Research & Development (TM R&D) has won the Innovation award at the Asia Communication Awards 2013 held in Singapore during recently during CommunicAsia 2013 event in June.

TM R&D chief executive officer Dr Gopi Kurup said the award recognised the team's innovative Advance Internet Lighting Application (AILA), which is able to provide high speed broadband Internet using visible light as an alternative and complementary medium to existing wireless communications.

Dr Kurup said by using light emitting diode (LED) technology, the AILA application is an energy-efficient last mile connectivity solution with both illumination and communications capabilities.

"Visual light communications is part of our research portfolio for future network and communications technologies," he said. "The research opens up novel approaches in looking at the potential of new lighting sources and applications. We are proud of the team's progress in a relatively short period and the industry peer recognition of the achievement."

"We are indeed very glad that our innovations have been recognised at the regional level and this win definitely gives us a boost to continue keeping abreast of the latest technologies, all in the effort of serving you better," said TM chief technology and innovation officer Giorgio Migliarina.

Now in its third year, the Asia Communication Awards, which is organised by Total Telecomm, recognises the achievements of Asian telecommunication companies and the individuals responsible for the innovations, achievements and new services.
