SingTel had launched an e-mag store, Delite, less than two years ago in Singapore. Now, it is reportedly being killed off.
According to a report published in The Business Times today, SingTel's magazine app store Delite is being shut down by June this year.
The Singapore telco told the newspaper that it was exploring alternative ways to offer digital magazines.
When it was launched in late 2010, Delite was touted as the first-of-its-kind digital magazine reader in town. The app was developed in partnership with Singapore-based tech company, NCS. It offered several local magazines such as Hardware, Asian Geographic Passport, Teenage, Wine & Dine and others. Currently, it offers 42 titles and can be downloaded on the iPad, according to the report.
A publisher who used the app to sell his magazines on the e-store told the newspaper that Dellite offered the best rates in Singapore and its only competitor here was US-based Zinio.
The demise of this app store in Singapore "heralds a time when SingTel will have to face down corporations with which it previously had no quarrel, like Apple," the report's writer commented in her piece.
