Singapore team’s Bleisure app wins Sabre’s hackathon

Nayela Deeba | Nov. 8, 2016
The winning app aims to help travel agents plan and book more personalised trips tailored for travellers combining business and leisure in the same itinerary.

A Singapore team has emerged as the winner of Sabre Corporation's 'Destination Hack: Singapore' competition.

The 24-hour event challenged Asia Pacific innovators and developers to create an app with the scope to reinvent travel.

The winning travel app, called "Moments", was invented by a Singaporean team of tech experts and entrepreneurs to address the growing trend for "Bleisure" travel in Asia Pacific. Bleisure refers to extending a business trip for personal purposes.

Through the app, travel agents are allowed to access and track a 'social profile' created by business travellers through Sabre's platform-for add on recommendations such as booking for concert tickets or exhibitions.

The app is also equipped with a management tool, TripCase and tie-ins from online itinerary platforms such as Expedia and Eventbrite. This allows additional leisure bookings to be added into the main travel itinerary, which also incorporates itemised expense tracking to distinguish between business and personal expenses.

For winning the hackathon, the team was awarded US$10,000 which will go towards supporting future development of the "Moments" App.

"We loved the idea of an app that addresses a very specific traveller group. A combination of socioeconomic factors and rapidly advancing technological enablement in this region is fuelling a rapid evolution in the way people travel, and we're seeing a lot of new patterns and preferences emerging. It's essential that travel businesses have the right technologies in place to adapt to these changing traveller demands," commented Roshan Mendis, senior vice president for Sabre Travel Network Asia Pacific.
