The second Singapore Airline (SIA) app challenge will kick off on 1 October 2016 with a theme "SingaporeAir, A Great Way to Fly".
Participants will be tasked to build a digital application drawn from real-world business challenges to improve the travel experience of modern travelers. SIA will provide participants its application programming interfaces (APIs) related to flight schedule, flight status and check-in for the first time.
Unlike last year's edition which limits participation to students in Singapore-based universities and polytechnics, this year's challenge will be open to non-students too. Each team is allowed a maximum of four members.
"We are very excited to host the SIA App Challenge for a second time. The response for the inaugural competition was extremely heartening, with close to 180 tertiary students participating. This proves that there is keen interest among our young minds to make use of digital technology to further enhance the business development of industries such as aviation. We also hope that many, not just students, will be inspired to pursue careers in the aviation industry through this competition," said George Wang, Vice President for Information Technology at SIA, in a press statement.
Participants will be mentored by representatives from SIA, Microsoft, IBM, and Amadeus as they develop their working prototypes and ensure they have a better understanding of the aviation industry.
Teams will be required to present their projects to judges on 8 October 2016, where they will be evaluated on innovation, business value, technical competency, user experience and presentation.
The first prize winners in Student Category will win a trip to Silicon Valley in the U.S., where they will visit technology companies like Airbus, Google and IBM. They may also gain an internship stint with SIA. On the other hand, members of the winning team in the Open Category will each have a return ticket courtesy of SIA to any destination that the airlines to and cash prize.
The SIA app challenge is in partnership and sponsored by TCS, SITA, Salesforce, RedHat, NUS Enterprise, NUS Institute of Systems Science, Deloitte, Cisco, StarHub, Singtel, Expedia and PayPal.
