French communications giant Alcatel-Lucent said that quickening business cycles demand a new communications approach during the announcement in Malaysia of its new enterprise solution called OpenTouch.

OpenTouch is designed to allow businesses make profitable use of collaboration regardless of device or location, said Alcatel-Lucent product marketing director Stanislas Corporeau, speaking in Kuala Lumpur late September during a regional tour.

Corporeau, together with Alcatel-Lucent Malaysia country manager David Lee, and Alcatel-Lucent VP cross industry solutions Dirk Dumortier, discussed the challenge faced by enterprises of effectively managing the proliferation of mobile devices by an increasingly mobile workforce.

Lee said many people were using their personal mobile devices to collaborate on work projects. "Enterprises need to basically both empower users within an enterprise environment as well as create an environment that allows the use of personal mobile devices of different types to support multimedia collaborative channels that include video and data."

"OpenTouch is a portfolio of new communication solutions comprising products and services that deliver a multiple experience," said Corporeau. "An equivalent example would be Coffee Bean, which developed a new service, offering a higher level of value and qualitative experience from coffee. OpenTouch combines to offer and allow an enhanced level of productivity and efficiency in the enterprise arena.

"In essence, unified messaging or communications (UC) evolved into services such as conferencing, collaboration and managed services," he said.  "The next step is OpenTouch, a suite that is built to help enterprises intelligently manage conversations of different kinds - such as video, messaging or voice- as well as allow users to seamlessly hop from one device to another without a break in the conversation."

90 percent of Internet traffic will be video

"Business issues now demand faster and a greater level of collaboration than a one-to-one discussion," said Dumortier. "Group collaboration has evolved to meet complex problems, which must also be solved faster, without delays through travel or other logistics."

"Not only are business cycles quickening, but there are now more than 5 billion mobile devices on Planet Earth, and by 2015, 90 percent of Internet traffic will be video," he said. "In the past, video collaboration meant a move to different equipment. The ideal solution, of course, cannot be device-centric as people often use different devices during the day. Alcatel-Lucent OpenTouch's native conferencing capabilities means that video will be as easy as making a phone call."
