Q&A with Sam Grocott: Data driven enterprise

Zafar Anjum | Oct. 28, 2013
Big Data and Enterprise IT are converging into the data driven enterprise, says Sam Grocott, Vice President, Innovation and Strategic Development, EMC Isilon. He elaborates on Isilon’s growth in the region and future plans.

What has been the market response to your products in the Asia Pacific region? What has the growth been like?

Isilon has had very good customer and partner momentum in the last few years. We have over 350 customers using our technology across the region, supported by 243 sales professionals and 60 certified engineers from both EMC and our partner ecosystem. We have been in the region over the last seven years with a presence in over 20 locations. Currently the business in the region is worth more than US$100 million and growing greater than 50 percent YoY.

We have customers in Media and Entertainment, Oil and Gas, Healthcare, Life Sciences, Video Surveillance, Government and Manufacturing.

What are the verticals that will be highly responsive to your technology?

Isilon continues to innovate for the worlds of big data and enterprise IT. Isilon has been widely adopted in commercial HPC markets such as media and entertainment, energy and life sciences. For these market segments Isilon continues to up the throughput performance and add additional capabilities with purpose built accelerator nodes, as example.

As these segments evolve to next generation workflows including cloud and analytics, Isilon has the capabilities today to enable their next generation requirements. Markets such as video surveillance are also adopting Isilon as the scale-out storage solution that can also support native analytics for uses such as facial recognition, as example.

As big data analytics transforms organisations' data warehouses to forward looking results driven environments, the capability to support Pivotal and Cloudera analytics solutions with native HDSF protocol support is driving Isilon adoption for enterprise uses across many verticals.

Financial Services and Healthcare are examples that are proving responsive to Isilon's scale-out capabilities that include analytics, secure on premises mobility, automated tiering and immutable online archives, enterprise audit integration and encrypted clusters providing these markets with a platform to consolidate their file workflows while also meeting their security and compliance requirements. We are also seeing Isilon being widely embraced across verticals as the platform of choice for scale-out home directories, file shares and archives.

What are your plans for the region in the next one to two years?

  • Greater focus on vertical solutions in the key segments highlighted earlier (Media and Entertainment, Oil and Gas, Healthcare, Life Sciences, Video Surveillance, Government and Manufacturing).
  • Geographical expansion - supporting the localisation requirements in key markets like China, Japan, Korea and also investing in technical training, product readiness and joint go-to-market programmes.
  • Service providers - start the transition in key markets like Australia, Japan, Korea, Singapore, China and India to providing big data infra solutions as a subscription-based cloud service offering.
